As summer draws to a close, one of the things we’re looking forward to in the fall is the list of Best Places to Work in PA. I’ve mentioned before that McKonly & Asbury is hoping to once again make the list after 5 straight years among the rankings. So my colleagues and I have spent a lot of time talking with organizations that get what it takes to be a talent magnet and an employer of choice. One of those companies is Cargas Systems. Chip Cargas founded Cargas Systems, back in 1988 in a small bedroom corner using a Macintosh SE computer with a 9” screen (still on display in Chip’s office!), as a computer consulting firm.
The concept of Cargas Systems had several origins. Chip had a vision of establishing a company around core values and of fostering a work environment where employees would be motivated by those values. Teamwork, customer care, and shared success are the values that have helped Cargas Systems stay atop the list of Best Places to Work in PA for years. Their business helps other businesses bridge the gap between processes, people, and technology in order to enhance their overall business success. They use tools like Microsoft-based software solutions to make that happen. But, it’s their commitment to their team that has made them such a magnet for talent and propelled their success. In 1998, they rolled out direct employee stock ownership – to give team members a stake in the company.
Chip and the whole team at Cargas Systems understand the premise that providing great service begins with having great people, and keeping and attracting great people requires great managers. They’re living the principles of the Gallup Model every day, and reaping the rewards – not just on the bottom line, which has been healthy – but, also in building a special place to work.
We got to know Chip as we talked with other companies that are dedicated to being Best Places to Work. It’s why we’ve ended up working together. “What a treat to work with accountants that are fun to be with. I am happy to work with an organization that is a great place to work and an organization that has engaged employees that love to serve customers.”
We share a passion for this philosophy. Other entrepreneurs that want to build something special should look at Chip as a model, and follow his lead. Cargas even has training sessions to teach others.
This is an organization that “Gets It.”
