Today I did a presentation on social networking for EK McConkey & Co. A few of their leaders have been reading my blog and thought it would be useful to their team if I shared how I try to add value to my network using the web. It was a very lively and entertaining discussion about things to avoid (like sharing too much personal information) and keeping it professional. We also talked about the ability of social networking to keep making connections 24/7, and how it does not matter how many “friends” you have, but the depth of those connections. If you are a glad-handing, networking jerk and only taking from others, eventually no one will work to help you. As Keith Ferrazzi in his book Never Eat Alone stated, “the currency of networking (whether online or in person) is not greed, but generosity.”
