Eastern Insurance Holdings, Inc. (EIHI), headquartered in Lancaster, PA, is one of the leading providers of specialty insurance products and services in our area. At EIHI, the benefits of loyal employees, shareholders, agents, brokers, policyholders, and their respective employees are put first, and they are able to excel by bringing fresh perspectives to the market place and the work place. This differentiates them as a uniquely progressive insurer and employer and puts them on my list of Organizations that “Get It.”
I believe that what differentiates EIHI as an organization that “Gets It” is their development of a unique and respectable culture that benefits all within the company. Their culture is based on five aspects: Personal Development, Open Communication, Continuous Improvement, Community Spirit, and Fun.
EIHI believes that personal development not only enhances the individual employee, but as these employees continually enhance their individual skill and knowledge base, the knowledge gained can also be shared with co-workers and add value to the organization as a whole. EIHI is constantly providing ways for employees to grow and develop, including goal-setting plans, training sessions, and rewards for employees.
EIHI facilitates open communication among all its employees. By fostering an environment where an employee can deal openly and directly with their supervisor, their work environment has proved to be one where communications can be clear and attitudes can be positive. And by adopting an “Open Door” policy, there is an entrepreneurial mindset throughout the company that encourages innovation, team spirit, and productivity.
EIHI also encourages their employees to voice their opinions and contribute suggestions to improve the quality of their work environment which allows for continuous improvement. By soliciting feedback from their employees, EIHI is not only satisfying their employees’ desires to express their opinions, but this also allows them to be able to use employees’ experience and thoughts in order to improve all facets of their operation.
Extending their reach to the community, EIHI is generously supportive in their community involvement and donates their time and resources to enrich the communities in which they live, work, and serve. EIHI provides substantial financial support and their employees donate their time and talents to events benefiting several community organizations, such as United Way, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Carol for Heart, Junior Achievement, and frequent toy, food, and supply drives that benefit local charities.
Beyond these things, EIHI underwrites a "Fresh Outlooks, Better Outcomes" scholarship through Kids' Chance of Pennsylvania, Inc. EIHI also sponsors a golf and walk-a-thon benefiting the organization, which provides scholarship grants to children of workers who have been killed or seriously injured in a work-related accident resulting in financial need. EIHI’s subsidiary, Eastern Life & Health, serves as the 2009 corporate sponsor of Brush. Brush. Smile!(r), a St. Joseph Health Ministries program which improves the oral health of low-income or economically-disadvantaged children through direct care, classroom education, and advocacy.
Last, but certainly not least, EIHI makes sure their employees are having fun. EIHI has developed GRAPES, which is a “fun” committee made up of representatives from each department that coordinates activities and events both inside and outside of work. This provides their employees with an opportunity to have fun, celebrate successes, and come together as a team on a group level.
As evidence of the fact that EIHI is a company that “Gets It”, they were named as one of the Best Places to Work in PA for five years. EIHI’s subsidiary, Eastern Alliance Insurance Group, was also recognized six times as one of the Fastest Growing Companies in Central PA, and before becoming part of publicly-traded EIHI, was recognized four times as one of the Top 100 Privately Held companies in Central PA.
It is clear to see how EIHI has become one of the leading providers of specialty insurance products and services in our area. They have achieved their goals by attracting and retaining employees who are committed to the continued success of the business by providing a work environment that fosters energy, creativity, and a passion for excellence.
This is an organization that "Gets It.”
Eastern Alliance is a great company. As President of their Agency Advisory Council, I have gotten to know them VERY WELL over the past 10 years. Their continued focus and success is directly related to the management team. I strongly believe that they have assembled the sharpest, young management team in Central PA.
