How is that for an opening? I started writing my blog The Exuberant Accountant nearly two years ago. My main reason for starting the blog was to share my passion for family business, advise business owners, mentor young people and help organizations create a best places to work culture.
Most of my clients are middle market companies and those C-level executives (CEO, CFO, COO…) are busy running the company and seldom have the time to think much beyond the fires of the current day. My goal was to give them regular executive updates on key topics that they should know about and motivate them to implement certain practices in their business. I try to help them ask the right questions in their business to sustain and build upon employee morale especially in light of the economic downturn. I take great pride when a CEO will respond to one of my posts and tell me they discussed a blog post in a recent management meeting.
When I started I thought if I could eventually get 50 of my key clients and other business leaders to follow the blog it would be successful and worth the time and energy required to produce it. Well, two years later it has far exceeded that. I now have a global following and my posts are picked up numerous times and reposted in other business/financial blogs. I am a featured blogger for AccountingWEB and Toolbox for Finance. I even had Entrepreneur Magazine feature the blog in an article last year as one of four accounting blogs “that can help you gain a better understanding of your business finances.”
During this process, I saw blogging as a way to give back to my network and business community; little did I realize how much I would gain. I have learned so much about various topics and it has forced me to learn and question ideas that have helped me grow in my profession and also personally. I have also become passionate about adding value. Many advisors throw those words around, but seldom understand what a busy CEO or CFO values. During this journey, I have tired to focus on what keeps them awake at night and have attempted to be a source of valuable information to them.
The success of my blog has given me the confidence to pursue a lifelong dream of writing a book. I am happy to report that I have just started working with
Starting my blog two years ago seemed like such an inconsequential decision at the time, but has turned out to be one of the most impactful things in my life. Thank you to everyone who has and continues to support this blog.
Congrats Scott. Your blog has been great and I'm excited to see a book deal come out of your hard work.
